Dr. Lakmal Jayaratne and his crew won the gold medal under the open category for their patented
invention of a red clay-based water filter for the removal of Fluoride, Arsenic, and Cadmium from
drinking water at Sahasak Nimavum National Invention and Innovation Competition which is an annual
event organized by the Sri Lanka Inventors commission to encourage the making or creation of inventions
by Sri Lankan citizens. Sahasak Nivaum 2021 was opened for both International and local inventors
under 14 technical fields.
