Prof. G.R.A. Kumara Received SUSRED Award 2024
We are proud to announce that Prof. G.R.A. Kumara, Research Professor at the National Institute of Fundamental Studies (NIFS), has been honored with the prestigious SUSRED Award 2024 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) of Sri Lanka. The award ceremony took place on 16th July 2025 at Lotus Hall, BMICH, with the presence of several distinguished guests.
The event was graced by Dr. Chrishantha Abeysena, Hon. Minister of Science & Technology, who served as the Chief Guest, and Prof. Gomika Udugamasooriya, President’s Senior Advisor on Science & Technology, as the Guest of Honour. Senior officials from the NSF and the Ministry also participated in the ceremony.
The SUSRED (Support Scheme for Supervision of Research Degrees) Award was presented to Prof. Kumara in recognition of his outstanding supervision of the MPhil research project of A.D.T. Medagedara, titled:
“Low-cost and high-efficient energy storage and conversion devices using activated carbon.”
This research contributes significantly to the development of affordable, sustainable energy storage technologies by utilizing activated carbon derived from natural materials, addressing national priorities in renewable energy and materials innovation.
Prof. Kumara’s recognition highlights NIFS’s continued leadership in energy storage, material processing, and capacity building in Sri Lanka’s scientific community.

Prof. Nazrim Marikkar and Prof. Gamini Seneviratna Honored with the Highly Cited Paper Award
Prof. Nazrim Marikkar, Head of the Food Chemistry Programme of NIFS and Prof. Gamini Seneviratna, Head of the Microbial Biotechnology Programme of NIFS were jointly honored with the Highly Cited Paper Award by the National Science Foundation of Sri Lanka. They received this award from the Secretary to the Ministry of Science & Technology during an award ceremony. Prof. Marikkar and Prof. Senevirathna were given this honor for a paper published in the Journal of the National Science Foundation, Sri Lanka in 2019. This paper was co-authored by Dr. C. Yalegama as a part of a collaborative research work between NIFS and CRISL. NIFS wishes to express its hearty congratulations to these scientists for this outstanding achievement in research.
