Prof. Cyril Ponnamperuma Memorial Oration: “Commemorating 100 Years of Quantum Mechanics”

The National Institute of Fundamental Studies (NIFS) proudly hosted a symposium titled "A Century of Quanta: 100 Years of Quantum Mechanics and Its Legacy" on the 13th of June 2025. The event was organized to commemorate a century of quantum mechanics—one of the most transformative scientific revolutions of the 20th century—and to reflect on its enduring legacy in science and technology.
The symposium brought together physicists, researchers and 15 online participants join to celebrate the achievements of quantum theory and to highlight its continuing role in shaping modern scientific understanding and innovation. The symposium commenced with opening remarks from the director of NIFS, who emphasized the foundational importance of quantum mechanics in modern physics.
The Professor Cyril Ponnamperuma Memorial Oration delivered by honorary Prof. Kirthi Tennakone. "Commemorating 100 Years of Quantum Mechanics". Prof. Tennakone, offered a historical and philosophical reflection on the evolution of quantum mechanics. The oration paid tribute to Prof. Cyril Ponnamperuma, a visionary scientist and founding figure of NIFS.
Honorary Prof. Asiri Nanayakkara delivered the lecture on “Amazing and Puzzling Nature of Quantum World.” This session delved into the strange and why quantum mechanics remains both fascinating and challenging to comprehend even after 100 years.
Research Prof. Lakshman Dissanayake delivered the “Quantum Dots: From Quantum Theory to Biomedical Breakthroughs.” Focusing on applications, this lecture highlighted how quantum theory has moved from blackboard equations to real-world technologies. Prof. Dissanayake outlined ongoing research and potential future innovations.
An engaging session where participants interacted with speakers, raising thought-provoking questions about the nature of quantum reality, the future of quantum research, and ethical dimensions of emerging technologies. Finally, four winners rewarded with cash prizes.
The director of NIFS concluded the event by thanking the guest speakers, participants, and organizing committee for their invaluable contributions to the success of the symposium. The importance of promoting public engagement with fundamental science was reiterated as part of NIFS’s ongoing mission.
This symposium not only celebrated 100 years of quantum theory but also honored the legacy of Prof. Cyril Ponnamperuma, whose contributions laid the groundwork for fundamental scientific research in Sri Lanka. Through this event, NIFS reaffirmed its commitment to fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and scientific excellence among future generations.
