International Day for Biological Diversity 2025

To commemorate the International Day for Biological Diversity 2025, the Biodiversity Division of the Ministry of Environment organized a celebration on 22nd May 2025 at the NIFS Popham Arboretum in Dambulla. The NIFS Popham Arboretum holds significant ecological value as a dry zone forest ecosystem. It provides a vital habitat for a wide range of biodiversity, including birds, reptiles, amphibians, mammals and more. The forest is home to approximately 100 species of timber plants, around 70 medicinal plant species, and nearly 350 plant species from 83 genera including climbers, creepers, and various endemic flora.
The programme commenced with a symbolic tree planting (coconut sapling) ceremony was held to signify ecological restoration. The welcome speech was delivered by the secretary, Dr. Sunimal Jayathunge, Additional Secretary (Environment Development). Prof. Siril Wijesundara, Research Professor and the Acting director at the National Institute of Fundamental Studies, presented insights on the current state of Sri Lanka’s biodiversity. Prof. Gamini Pushpakumara, Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya, delivered the keynote speech on "Promoting Low-Consumption Food Systems". Ten bee boxes were presented to the nearby villagers by the Hon. Minister to promote community-based sustainable beekeeping.
This event served as a meaningful platform to raise public awareness on the importance of biodiversity and its role in sustainable development. The participation of key stakeholders and subject experts added substantial value to the commemoration of the International Day for Biological Diversity 2025.
