Hands-on Workshop on Renewable Energy Conversion and Storage Devices – Successfully Completed
The Science Education & Dissemination Unit (SEDU) of the National Institute of Fundamental Studies (NIFS), together with the Material Processing and Device Fabrication (MPDF) group, successfully conducted a Hands-on Workshop on Renewable Energy Conversion and Storage Devices for school science students on 11 November 2025. This programme was held as part of the Science Week initiative organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
During the workshop, students enthusiastically took part in fabricating their own low-cost dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) and energy-storage supercapacitors. Using activated coconut shell charcoal, they developed fully functional supercapacitor devices and characterized their performance with guidance from MPDF research assistants. The solar cells were tested under natural sunlight, allowing students to observe real-time energy conversion.
This interactive workshop offered an inspiring platform for young learners to explore how locally available natural materials can be transformed into advanced clean-energy devices. NIFS and SEDU extend their sincere appreciation to all staff members, research assistants, and students whose contributions made this event a resounding success.
