
Ahmed Ahsan
Research Assistant - Microbiology and Soil Ecosystems
Ahmed Ahsan is a Research Assistant in the Microbiology and Soil Ecosystems Unit at the National Institute of Fundamental Studies (NIFS), where he is engaged in the mass cultivation and characterization of native cyanobacteria from diverse Sri Lankan ecosystems. His research focuses on evaluating their nutraceutical potential and bioactive properties. He holds a B.Sc. (Hons) in Microbiology from Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, where he conducted undergraduate research on bioplastic-producing bacteria.
Prior to joining NIFS, Ahmed worked as a Research Scientist in Microbiology at the Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology (SLINTEC), where he managed research activities related to biofertilizers. His multidisciplinary background spans microbial biotechnology, sustainable product development, and bioplastic-producing bacteria isolation. He is also an experienced science communicator, public speaker, and an award-winning presenter in both academic and extracurricular forums.
Ahmed’s research interests include bioremediation, cyanobacterial diversity, bioproduct development, and sustainable biotechnology. Through his work, he hopes to contribute to eco-friendly innovations that benefit both human health and the environment.
