Professor R.G.S.C. (Sanath) Rajapakse has been appointed as the Chairman of the National Institute of Fundamental Studies (NIFS) in Sri Lanka by HE the President. Currently, he serves as the Dean and Senior Professor at the Faculty of Science, University of Peradeniya, specializing in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology.
Professor Rajapakse holds a B.Sc. and M.Phil. from the University of Peradeniya, and a Ph.D. from Hokkaido University in Japan. His research contributions have been recognized with several prestigious awards, including multiple Presidential Awards for Research, the NRC Merit Award, and the SUSRED Award from the National Science Foundation of Sri Lanka.
In addition to his academic roles, Professor Rajapakse has been an active member of the NIFS Research Council, nominated by the University Grants Commission (UGC). His appointment as Chairman is expected to further strengthen NIFS's mission to advance fundamental scientific research and foster innovation in Sri Lanka.
