The 50th School Science Programme (SSP) – 2026, organized by the National Institute of Fundamental Studies (NIFS), was successfully held from 2–4 September 2026, with the participation of 150 students representing 40 schools from different parts of Sri Lanka.
The three-day programme commenced with an inauguration ceremony attended by distinguished guests, including the Governor of the Central Province, Dr. H.S. Fernando, the Chairman of the Board of Governors, Director NIFS, scientists, teachers and students. The keynote address was delivered by
Prof. S.H.P.P. Karunaratne, under the theme “From Free Education to Future Innovation: Shaping Your Future in a Changing World.”
Throughout the programme, students participated in scientific lectures, demonstrations, laboratory visits, interactive activities and discussions with scientists and researchers, providing them with valuable practical exposure to fundamental science and scientific research.
The programme concluded on 4 September 2026 with a closing ceremony attended
by Hon. Prof. Chrishantha Abeysena, Minister of Science and Technology. Certificates were awarded to the participating students, who also shared their reflections and experiences gained during the programme.
The successful completion of the 50th SSP marked a significant milestone in NIFS’s continued commitment to promoting science education, nurturing scientific curiosity and inspiring the next generation of young scientists in Sri Lanka. NIFS extends its sincere appreciation to all students, teachers, resource persons, scientists, organizers and supporting institutions who contributed to the success of the programme.
